Christian Bell in on his 3rd year fine art degree, Christian presented his creation in the form of action research. “Action research is simply a form of self-reflective enquiry undertaken by … in which the practices are carried out” (Carr and Kemmis 1986: 162).
He calls it, Places of making not places of guarding. He used the influence of DR. Stephen Pritchard, who “is an artist and academic, researching and practising activist art projects in community settings in order to create spaces for community empowerment, resistance and liberation” (Pritchard, S. 2016).
He approach the ‘Town Scope Heritage Funding’
He also said, “memory and imagination of a place in time, forgotten”. (Bell, C. 2020).
He coordinated a place making not place guarding exhibition. He create dan event at The Prism Gallery Blackburn where the original attendees of ‘Peepers night club. Peepers was based underground beneath the Turkish baths, the baths were demolished between 1883 & 1984. As Peepers was underneath the baths, the ground was filled in.
Peepers was an underground nightclub between the 1970’s and 1980’s and people who attended are around 50 years old today. The nightclub exists, “only in memory and imagination” (Bell, C. 2020). Christian wanted to revisit the time and place to engage it differently. (I personally loved this idea; I may try to carry out this practice for a self-realisation.
Christian says, his exhibition/event was not a reunion as such but, the regulars from the 1980’s who attended the exhibition in 2020 all came together. The event had nostalgia from the original Peepers night club, Coca Cola and Lilt was the only drink available to purchase as it was back in the days of Peepers night club.
The feedback was quite big, this was due to social media and communication is still continuing around this event. From social media it was found that, the DJ at the time played a song ‘ Blame it on the boogie’ during the night, the attendees were not happy and because of the reaction to the song playing, the DJ through the vinyl record of Blame it on the Bogie onto the dance floor, the people then destroyed the vinyl record. This became a weekly thing at Peepers, it was heavy rock and moshing music that was played traditionally each week; hence the reactions of a chart song being played mid set.
Q&A session after this presentation;
What things did you had to carry out when approaching finding for this project?
Risk assessment forms, a lot of data had to be provided.
Lots of paperwork.
Coordination can be quite difficult
What does the funding organisation get from sponsoring this project?
Collaboration of artists.
Networking.
What would you do in future projects like this one?
Feedback forms such as, post codes, how likely are you about attending?
Advice Christian gave for anyone who is interested in doing their own project:
Networking is very good for making contacts and funding resources.
Go to artist exhibitions, another way to make connections in the art world.

Blake Mycoskie discovered the typical soft shoe called Alpargata (similar to the Spanish Espadrilles but also that a lot of children don’t have shoes which leads to major health issues. Scholtus, P. (2006). “So I decided to use my entrepreneurial background and create a business model that would give one-for-one, so we could build a business by selling shoes and, at the same time, give them away” Gordon, J. Debbie Fisher from Ian Mankin came into Blackburn College today to see the work we FAD students are producing for the Ian Mankin brief.
Show case of my work on the IM brief so far to Ian Mankin’s visitor of Debbie Fisher. Problem: The ‘eco friendly’ was not flipped during design process. Solution: Laser cut more correctly. Solution: Make stickers to get the project finished

Ian Mankin Visit – Debbie Fisher feedback – Feb 5th, 2020
Definitely use my stamps. (My stamps could be a way of showing customers the fabric process. (Debbie took a photo of my stamps to show to IM manger)
Use pinking shears for cutting fabric, this will keep fabric from fraying
None organic material is recycled
Lined yarn is grown naturally in Belgium, France, Netherlands, Germany.
Recycled yarn is sourced from Italy
IM excess/waste thread is produced when cutting fabric from rolls, IM are working on a way to put the waste fabric back into the IM cycle
I now intend to create a new process table that puts the waste fabric into the process table.
I mentioned another idea I have, ‘Toms’ when a pair of Toms shoes are purchased, another pair of shoes are donated to poor people. (Give something back).
Look at how people’s jobs where/are affected and how weaving came into the community
Look at the people in the design process, how are they affected
New Process Table Produced from Debbie Fisher Feedback
Final New Process Table – Circular as in recycling
Took onboard the feedback from Debbie Fisher, and concentrated on the yarn to fabric, waste and cut off being put back into yarn, a circular process to cut down more waste.
Final New Product Line
General Evaluation – Ian Mankin Brief
Why selected this brief? Redirection from MANW and coming out of my comfort zone, trying something new, textiles)
Research – artists and designers, IM & Eco considerations? Carbon footprint, I am very passionate about the ecological effect of the human footprint. Recycled materials, Balsa was used as it is 50% better for the environment than plywood.
Problems – what went wrong and how did you resolve problems? (Trouble shooter and annotations).
Planning & Production – concept/ideas?
Practical skills – what carried out and what learned?Textiles, screen printing, made my own eco stamps of eco logos for my tags, Deeper understanding of ecological problems and how I can reduce my own carbon footprint. Reusable coffee cups and water bottles also recycle used materials each opportunity I get.
Evaluation & Reflection – what do differently – Supporting artists and designers, overall progression and development, materials and processes, new skills. (Debbie Fisher feedback).
What would you do differently? Screen printing, I created a piece of work in AI on one layer, now I know that layers are easier to create an acetate print using PS layers.
Designing posters to use for screen printing. I have had to separate all icons form one layer to several layers, this is so I can screen print a range of Eco colours.
Screenshots of the separated layers
I am hoping. the final poster will look like this but, as a screenprint
Screenshots of the layers separated and then changed colour to black, this is to enable clarity when creating screens for screen printing
Slideshow of poster design of layouts exploration
Photoshop Design Screenshots of the separating layers process.
I intend to create A3 sized posters. I am enquiring about using the UCBC laser cutter to laser cut the icons onto either, rubber, Lino or wood and then make my own stamps to make an Eco poster using sustainable inks, paints.
Further experimenting with my Eco icons.
Poster development, screen printed backgrounds then printed type and vectors onto the screen prints using a laser printer
“The Art of Batik. Batik is an ancient art that has been practiced for 2,000 years in southeast Asia. … The process uses dye-resistant wax to create elaborate patterns and designs, and the wax is then washed to reveal the batik pattern or the process is repeated to create multiple colours” (www.thebatikboutique.com).
